The traditional anniversary gift lists date from the Victorian era. Tin for a tenth. Silver for a twenty-fifth. They exist because someone had to invent a system, not because tin is a meaningful way to mark a decade of marriage.
Most people giving a milestone anniversary gift want something that acknowledges specific years, not a material that happens to correspond to a number.
What actually lasts
Think about the gifts you have seen given and received at milestone anniversaries. The ones that get kept are almost never the expensive ones. They tend to share a few qualities: something made specifically for the couple, something that took real thought, or something that exists inside the years being celebrated.
A generic item in a box is pleasant and forgotten. Something with their life in it is kept.
- A book or album from their photos: the years as an actual object
- A framed piece of art with a date or place that means something to them specifically
- An experience with a reason: a return to where they first met, or somewhere they have always said they would go
- Something they want and would never spend on themselves: the good version of something they own a cheap version of
- A handwritten letter: costs nothing and people keep them for decades
Ideas worth considering
Ten years
A decade is enough to have a real story: a house, children, moves, careers. A ten-year book of photos is a specific object that neither of them would ever buy for themselves and that very few people think to make as a gift. If you can get access to the camera roll, or if they are willing to make it themselves from a voucher, it lands well.
Twenty-five years
Children are likely older at this point and often co-ordinate something together. This is where experiences tend to work well: a trip to a place that meant something early in the marriage, or tickets to something they have always meant to do. A book from a specific stretch within the twenty-five is worth considering, particularly the early years.
Forty or fifty years
Usually organised by children. The couple has been together for longer than most of the gift-givers have been alive.
Old photographs are often the answer here: printing and presenting photos from the first years of the marriage, which may not exist in digital form at all. Getting them scanned and printed is a significant undertaking, but the result is unlike anything you can buy. A scanning service that returns the originals plus digital copies is a reasonable starting point.
Why photographs work for this
Photographs are the one thing that exists inside the years being celebrated. A bottle of wine is general. A book of the first decade of a marriage is about them specifically, and impossible for anyone else to give.
The practical problem is that you do not have their photos, and asking for them can spoil the surprise or hand the job to the person you are buying for.
A voucher solves this. You buy it, they use it on their own camera roll whenever they want, and the book arrives at their door.
What we make
Our app makes a 48-page book from the camera roll: the best photos from the year you choose, selected automatically, reviewed before printing. It covers one year at a time, so it suits an anniversary of any length as a book of the most recent year, or of any specific year you ask them to choose.
It is £39.99 as a direct order or as a gift voucher with no expiry. There is also a wedding book at £99, which covers the wedding day itself from all the guests' phones: a different kind of anniversary gift.
